Fabric Painting: Tone on Tone

I use a lot of Moda Marbles as backgrounds and neutrals in my quilts.  I like the mottling and the fact that they read solid.  But sometimes I want a little more texture to add interest.  That thought inspired me to paint a fat quarter of white on white (WOW) fabric with several variations of the same color.

I started with red paint mixed with brown.

Then I added red mixed with black.

Red mixed with white went on next.

Last I painted and stamped with red mixed with metallic gray.  It doesn’t show in the picture, but the fabric has a bit of shimmer to it.

I love the result!  This technique is a keeper.

Are you tired of all the WOW painted fabric yet?  I had fun with this, but I think it’s time to move on.  I’ll have to browse the list of techniques I want to try and find another volunteer.
