Finding Joy in the Storm

crocusMany people are having a tough time these days.  I can honestly say I don’t know anyone living a charmed life.  We all have unique challenges, whether they are health, finances, career, or family.  I saw a picture online today of a house in Fargo with water up to the roofline.  My heart goes out to all those families.

When life starts spewing crap it becomes so important to make sure you find joy in each day.  What activities bring you joy?  I enjoy losing myself in a good book, hand or machine sewing, fabric painting, or a quiet walk in the woods.  Maybe you prefer browsing antique stores, playing music, swimming, or drawing.  Activities that make you forget everything else and relax are the ones to cherish.  If you don’t take care of yourself, both mentally and physically during tough times, it makes it that much harder to weather the storm.

When I first started this blog, I mentioned an old friend that told me something I never forgot.  When my problems seemed more than I could bear, she told me I could stand up and walk or crawl on bloody knees.  I’d get where I was going either way.

As I help mom deal with her health challenges, I am taking time every day to do something that brings me joy.  I made that decision on the first trip to her house this week, when I started thinking about how hard this could get.  My house needs cleaned and my family feels a bit neglected, but I won’t let that stop me from taking a few minutes to relax and breathe.  They are welcome to join me.

Now I’m off to hand stitch and enjoy the sunshine.  What will you do for yourself today?
